I’m James, the founder of Hollow Rock Fitness. I’m a personal trainer with over 24 years of training experience, shaped by constantly changing goals and a wide variety of training styles. Over the years I’ve trained for marathons, obstacle course racing and general strength and conditioning, which has given me a broad understanding of how the body adapts to different demands.

I was a national-level swimmer in my youth, which gave me a strong foundation in discipline, technique, and long-term athletic development. As my training evolved, my focus shifted away from competition and towards something more important to me; helping people move better, feel stronger, and cope more easily with the physical demands of everyday life.

I don’t believe you need to train for a specific sport to be an athlete. Everyone has weaknesses, and everyone can work on them. By improving strength, mobility, balance, and coordination, day-to-day tasks become easier and fitness goals become more achievable. If we find something difficult, we work on it.

​

Before I was a PT, I was a chef for around 19 years. The knowledge I gained from cooking has been very useful in my PT career as I am able to offer my clients nutritional guidance and recipe advice that supports training, performance and general health.

I have worked at a number of gyms as a PT in the past and after the pandemic, I finally opened Hollow Rock Fitness, something I’d wanted to do since I first started training. I wanted a space that allowed truly individual coaching, not ‘one-size-fits-all’ programmes, but training that adapts to each individual client.

​

I have been fortunate enough to train a very diverse range of people over the years, all with their own very specific needs, and from that I have gained a great deal of knowledge and experience. My clients have included older adults, children, people preparing for surgery, people recovering from injury, athletes training for specific sports and people with disabilities who require specific adaptations to their training.

I have become very busy over the last 5 years at Hollow Rock, and now my goal is to create a team of PTs who share my values, training approach and knowledge; so that no matter who you train with at Hollow Rock, you can expect high quality and truly bespoke training.

Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri : 6am to 5pm  ​​​

Tue : 6am to 3pm

Sat : 6am to 1pm​

(sessions can, and often are, scheduled outside these times, but if you're planning to drop in, the gym should almost always be open as the above times)
